Terms, privacy and the rest of it

1. What we store

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies through our third-party service providers. The Service itself does not set first-party tracking cookies beyond what is necessary for authentication and session management.

Two categories are used: essential storage, which the Service cannot operate without, and analytics, which measures how the website and the applications are used. What the cookie banner can switch off is one defined part of the second category, and sections 3 and 5 set out exactly which part.

The desktop application does not run in a web browser and sets no cookies. It holds the equivalent data in its own application storage, and the same two categories describe what it keeps.

2. Essential cookies

Essential cookies and storage keep you signed in, maintain your session, and record the cookie choice you made so the banner is not shown again on every page. They are set by us and by the providers below, and cannot be switched off while you are using the Service.

• Clerk: Sets cookies for authentication and session management. See Clerk's Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab).
• Stripe: May set cookies as part of payment processing and fraud prevention. See Stripe's Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab).

Stripe's cookies are set only when you subscribe to or manage a paid plan, and they are set in your own web browser: checkout and plan management open there rather than inside the desktop application.

3. Analytics and product usage

Analytics helps us understand which parts of Wiring Studio are used and where they fall short. Google Analytics is used on the marketing website to understand traffic sources and visitor behavior; PostHog is used within the application for product analytics.

• Google Analytics: May set cookies to distinguish users and throttle request rates. This is the one the cookie banner controls. See Google's Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab).
• PostHog: Records feature usage within the application. It is not set by the website and is not controlled by the cookie banner. See PostHog's Privacy Policy (opens in a new tab).

The cookie banner on our website governs Google Analytics only. PostHog and Sentry run inside the web application at app.wiring.studio and inside the desktop application — separate from the website, and neither shows a banner of its own — so a choice made on the website does not switch them off. Section 5 sets out what the banner does control, and how to object to the rest.

In the desktop application, Google Analytics is not used at all, PostHog session recording is switched off, and PostHog is prevented from loading any additional code from its own servers. Product-analytics events sent from the desktop application carry your operating system, processor architecture, and application version, so that we can tell platform-specific problems apart.

4. Local storage in the app

The application also stores data directly in your browser — local storage, IndexedDB and origin-private file storage — so that projects can be opened and edited without a round trip to the server, and so that work continues if your connection drops.

The desktop application keeps the equivalent data in its own application data directory, along with a cache of part images, any images and thumbnails waiting to be uploaded, and a small file used by crash reporting. That directory is:

• macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Wiring Studio
• Windows: %APPDATA%\Wiring Studio
• Linux: ~/.config/Wiring Studio

None of this is a tracking technology. It holds your own projects, parts library and interface preferences, and it stays on your device. Clearing it does not delete anything stored in your account.

Signing out clears the queue of changes that have not yet reached our servers, but it deliberately leaves the offline copy in place, so that signing back in is immediate rather than a full re-download. The copy is removed when you clear site data for the application in your browser, when you delete the application data directory above on the desktop, or when your access to a workspace is revoked. The desktop image cache is not cleared automatically and is not removed when you uninstall the application; deleting the directory above removes it.

5. Managing your choices

The banner shown on your first visit to the website offers "Accept all" and "Essential only". It sets one thing: whether Google Analytics may use analytics storage on wiring.studio. Choosing "Essential only" turns that off; choosing "Accept all" leaves it on. Until you choose, it is on — the banner records a decision rather than waiting for one.

Your choice is recorded in your browser and applies to that browser and that website only, so it must be made again on another device or after clearing site data.

You can also control or block cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies entirely may affect the functionality of the Service, including staying signed in.

The desktop application uses no browser cookies, so browser cookie settings do not reach it. To clear what it stores, delete the application data directory listed in section 4.
