Sharing

A share link opens a project, or one of its revisions, read-only in a browser for anyone who has the link. The viewer needs no account and cannot change anything.

What a share link is

A share link is a web address of the form wiring.studio/s/ followed by a long random token. Anyone who has the address can open the project in their browser, on a phone as well as a computer, without signing in. Nothing is installed and nothing is written to the viewer's own projects.

A share page shows every sheet. Viewers can pan and zoom the Design and Wiring canvases, select a component or cable to inspect it, open the pin configuration, read the BOM and cutlist, and turn the harness around in the 3D view. Nothing can be edited: there are no editing tools, and attempted changes are refused.

WARNING

Anyone with the link can view the project, so treat the address like a password. Wiring Studio does not know who opens it. If a link reaches the wrong person, revoke it.

Live links and revision links

A link points at one of two things, and you choose when you create it:

KindWhat viewers see
Live projectThe project as it is now. The link follows every later edit, so viewers see changes as you make them. Use it for a design under review.
RevisionA revision frozen at the moment you saved it. It never changes, whatever happens to the live project afterwards. Use it for a version sent to manufacturing or signed off by a customer.

A project can have several links at once, for example a live link for your team and a revision link for the shop floor. Each link has its own settings and its own last-viewed date.

Reusable components cannot be shared. Share a project that uses one instead.

Creating a link

Open the share dialog from any of these places:

  • Canvas — choose Share Project… in the Design view's actions panel, or right-click empty space on the Design or Wiring canvas and choose it there.
  • Projects list — hover over a project and click the link button, or right-click it and choose Share….
  • Desktop app — with a project open, choose Project ▸ Share from the menu bar.
  • Revisions — in the Revisions dialog, open the ⋯ menu on the revision you want to share and choose Share This Revision.
The Share dialog with an existing revision link expanded to show its QR code, Save PNG and Save SVG, its settings and Revoke link, and below it the New link form with Live project and Revision 4 options and Create and copy link

Choose whether the link is to the live project or to a revision, set the options below, and choose Create and copy link. The new link goes to your clipboard, and you can copy it again from the list of links. Sharing needs a connection: the dialog is not available offline.

Link settings

Each link has its own settings, which you can change later without creating a new link. In the dialog every switch starts on, so a new link allows downloads and duplicating and hides prices until you turn them off.

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Allow downloadsOnViewers can export PDFs and spreadsheets and print the formboard. Turn it off to hide the export options.
Allow duplicatingOnA signed-in viewer can copy the project into their own workspace. The copy is theirs and does not stay linked to yours. It counts toward their plan's project limit like any other project.
Hide pricesOnPart prices and your price multiplier are removed on the server before anything is sent to the viewer, and the price columns are hidden. Viewers cannot recover them from the page or from an export.
Link expiresNeverNever, 7 days or 30 days. After that the link stops working.

Turning off Allow downloads hides the export options but does not stop someone from reading the data on screen, so it is not a way to keep information from a viewer. Only Hide prices removes data. If duplicating is allowed and Hide prices is on, the copy has the full design but its prices are zero.

Revoking, expiry and last viewed

Revoke a link from the share dialog to stop it working straight away, for everyone at once. A viewer who has the project open sees that the link is no longer available. Revoking is permanent: create a new link if you need one again. Deleting a project deletes all of its links.

The dialog shows when each link was last opened, to the day. It does not say who opened it, and your own visits count too.

QR codes for labels

The share dialog shows a QR code for the selected link. Print it on a heatshrink sleeve, a harness label or a drawing so that anyone with a phone can open the as-built documentation. Two downloads are offered:

  • Save PNG — 1024 pixels square with a transparent background, named after the project and, for a revision link, its revision number.
  • Save SVG — a vector file for label software and print workflows that scale artwork.

The code is black on a transparent background and keeps the blank margin around it (the quiet zone), which scanners need. Place it on a light background. The link is short, so the code stays simple and still scans when printed small.

Use a revision link for printed labels

A printed code lasts as long as its link does. A revision link always opens the snapshot the label was made from, so the label keeps matching the part it is on. A live link opens whatever the project looks like today, which may no longer match a harness already built.

Revoking a link, or letting it expire, stops every code printed from it. Set Link expires to Never for a link you print, and do not revoke it while labels using it are in service. The dialog warns you if the link has an expiry, and asks you to confirm before revoking.

Good to know

  • Search engines. Share pages are marked so they are never indexed, and there is no public gallery, so only the people you give a link to can find it.
  • Analytics. On a share page Wiring Studio records only three events: the page was viewed, the Made with Wiring Studio call to action was clicked, and the project was duplicated. Each carries the link's token and whether it is a live or revision link. It does not record the project's content, track clicks and scrolling, record sessions or build a profile of a signed-out viewer, and it respects a browser's Do Not Track setting.
  • Plans. Sharing is available on every plan, including Free. Sharing a revision needs a plan that can save revisions, because Free has none. See Pricing and plans.
  • Offline. Viewers need a connection. Shared data is held in memory and is discarded when the tab closes.

MCP

An AI assistant can create, list and revoke share links through three MCP tools: create_share_link, list_share_links and revoke_share_link. A link to a revision is created by passing the revision's id. A setting the assistant leaves out takes the server default rather than the dialog's: downloads allowed, duplicating not allowed, and prices shown. See MCP server.
